About Me

A Brief History of THIRLWALL AND CROSS

You will see from this website that my interest in working with wood is a passion.  I have made and restored furniture and wooden artifacts all though my working life.  As well as making and restoring wood objects I also teach furniture making/restoration but also write about furniture, in particular furniture of the Caribbean.

Have a look at the work on this website, and I hope you will see not only the variety of the work that interests me but also the design and craftsmanship.   Importantly for me its also about remaining curious about the work I do and how I do it.     John.

The furniture I make is the product of a life time of learning.  Commencing an apprenticeship when I was sixteen, studying at the London College of Furniture (LCF) in the 80s and the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the early 90s.  The subjects I qualified in were furniture design, restoration and at the RCA, history and theory of design.  I think, I draw and I make.  Some of the work I undertake requires careful attention to detail and enormous patience's, this is particularly true of wood carving and restoration work.  Other work is technically challenging and demands creative solutions, knowledge and skill.
